Botox® Basics: What It Is, How It Works, and What to Expect

Simply put, Botox® is a well-known injectable made from purified protein, specifically containing botulinum toxin. For 2025 and beyond, it continues to be a go-to treatment—not just for smoothing out wrinkles, like the ones Botox® Cosmetic tackles at our spa—but also for a variety of medical uses. For instance, doctors rely on it to manage conditions like hyperhidrosis, where Botox® injections help prevent excessive underarm sweating. Its versatility has made it a trusted choice year after year.

It does all of this by keeping signals from reaching their targets in the body. When the brain sends a message to underarm glands to begin to produce sweat, for instance, this treatment prevents that message from ever making it to those glands. Similarly, when the brain sends a message for muscles to contract as part of a facial expression—say, a scowl—that message doesn’t arrive at key muscles that contribute to forehead wrinkles.

The makers of the prescription injectable can boast more than four decades of study that have gone into ensuring its safety and efficacy. In fact, Botox® was used in a medical setting for years before it gained FDA approval and popularity as a cosmetic. Its development was influenced by roughly 2,500 studies, all of which helped it to get approved for a variety of uses, and new applications continue to be discovered and approved.

It is certainly popular as a cosmetic. In the twelve years since its cosmetic approval in 2002, there have been about eleven million Botox® injections. It regularly tops lists of globally popular procedures for men and women alike.

Frequently Asked Questions About Botox® Cosmetic

01

Botox® 101: What’s Behind Those Lines and Creases?

One reason Botox® is so popular may be because the wrinkles it treats are so universally visible, appearing on the upper half of the face, near the eyes, which tend to draw focus. Each scowl and frown, each squint and laugh, etches wrinkles into the skin moved by contracting muscles. Over time, as the countless daily expressions add up and aging skin loses its elasticity, the wrinkles become much more noticeable.

This is because your skin is much more than a thin covering for your body. It’s made up of layers, each composed of a variety of elements that fulfill roles vital to maintaining health and beauty. Unfortunately, some of those elements, such as collagen, diminish as we get older, decreasing our skin’s resiliency and vibrancy.

A loss of key natural moisturizers and more creates skin that can’t “bounce back” as effectively to its resting state after being pushed into a new position. Thin lines may deepen into moderate—or even severe—wrinkles visible even when the forehead is at rest.

02

Which Types of Wrinkles is Botox® Effective For?

If you’re new to this injectable, you may be asking, “Will Botox® get rid of all wrinkles?” Wrinkles that develop on the face due to muscle movements, as described above–known as dynamic wrinkles or expression wrinkles-are the ones that it is designed to address. These include crow’s feet that radiate from the corners of the eyes and furrows that crop up between the eyebrows, and others. It works by preventing specific muscles from contracting, giving the overlying skin a break and keeping wrinkles from appearing where they’re not wanted.

03

Where is Botox® Placed? Understanding The Art of Botox® Injections

Some of the most common Botox® injection sites are on the upper face, but it can also enhance other areas. Our advanced injection techniques emphasize precision and customization.

Our nurse injectors don’t simply apply this medicine to the general area where unwanted wrinkles appear. Injections must be made with precision, targeting specific muscles that fold the skin into telltale creases and lines when they contract. For crow’s feet, the muscles are known as the orbicularis oculi. There’s one to the side of either eye to control the eyelid closing, and injections are made into three areas in each of the two muscles.

For glabellar lines, multiple muscles come into play: the procerus muscle and the corrugator muscle. Injections will be made into four areas in the corrugator, which gets its name from the Latin word for causing wrinkles. One injection goes into the procerus. In all, there are five points to be targeted on the forehead.

Our Western Dermatology Consultants team is highly trained, and the injectors are supervised to ensure that this prescription medicine is administered safely and effectively. The precision not only prioritizes patient health but also maximizes the aesthetic benefit by preserving surrounding muscle action to allow for a continued range of expressions.

Despite the emphasis on precision, the injection process alone can take as little as ten minutes to complete. Patients have been known to schedule lunchtime appointments, then directly return to work or other activities.

04

Is Botox® Right for Me?

If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and pulled your forehead taut just to imagine what a smoother version of you might look like, chances are, this injectable is calling your name. Ideal candidates are generally healthy adults looking to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles—those lines that come from repetitive facial movements. Whether you’re in your 20s hoping to get ahead of the aging curve or further along and aiming to soften deeper-set creases, Botox® can be tailored just for you. Wondering, "How do you decide if you should get Botox®?" or “Am I a good candidate for Botox®?” Start by asking what you want to see in the mirror, and let us help guide you from there. This wrinkle relaxer is safe for all skin types and tones–and ideal for any time of year!

05

Start Early, Age Gracefully: Can Botox® Prevent Future Wrinkles?

Yes—and it’s one of Botox®'s biggest advantages! By relaxing the muscles responsible for repetitive movements, it reduces the wear and tear that causes deeper wrinkles to form over time. When used preventatively, Botox® can delay the appearance of fine lines before they become etched into your skin. That’s why many people in their late 20s or early 30s are turning to this wrinkle relaxer not just as a treatment, but as a proactive anti-aging strategy. Think of it as wrinkle insurance that helps preserve your skin's youthful appearance.

06

What Happens During a Botox® Session?

Nervous about injectables? Don’t be. A Botox® session at Western Dermatology Consultants is fast, comfortable, and practically over before you know it. We begin with a personalized consultation, followed by precisely placed injections using an ultra-fine needle. Most treatments take just ten to fifteen minutes—many of our patients stop by on their lunch break! While there may be some slight redness or puffiness afterward, these effects fade quickly, and you’re free to jump right back into your day. Your results will develop gradually over the next week, leaving you looking relaxed, refreshed, and totally natural. Yes, the answer to "Can Botox look natural?" is absolutely, especially when done by experienced hands.

07

Will Botox® Hurt?

Many patients describe the injection itself as similar to having their skin pinched, which is a common sensation related to procedures involving needles. Patients who are concerned about the injection can request that the skin at the injection site be numbed with ice or a topical medication before receiving the treatment. This can be discussed and arranged at the consultation or at any point prior to the injection.

08

Is Botox® 100% Safe?

Yes! Botox® Cosmetic is FDA-approved and globally trusted for its safety profile. When administered by experienced professionals (like ours!), side effects are minimal and typically limited to short-term redness, tenderness, or swelling at the injection site. More serious side effects are rare and usually occur only when treatments are not performed correctly. That’s why it’s crucial to choose a reputable practice like Western Dermatology Consultants, where your safety and results are always our top priorities.

09

What is the Cost of Botox® in Albuquerque?

No two patients are alike, so no two treatment sessions will be exactly the same. Whether a guest seeking Botox® is from nearby Santa Fe or a far-off region, the board-certified dermatologists at Western Dermatology will work to tailor a specific plan and discuss costs accordingly.

The cosmetic can continue to keep wrinkle-forming muscles from contracting for months. Since the effects of Botox® fade over time, many people opt to get semi-regular injections in order to maintain the smooth look of unlined skin. These maintenance treatments can also affect the cost of Botox®.

Know that the maker of Botox® Cosmetic offers a Brilliant Distinctions program that offers points and rewards that can be put toward future treatments for this and more of the company’s cosmetics, including the dermal filler line, Juvéderm, and the eyelash-lengthening Latisse®.

10

How Will You Feel After Your Botox® Treatment?

Botox® is considered to be a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure because it is far less invasive than surgery. Since the treatment involves only injections and requires no incisions or sutures, there is no necessary recovery period for healing. Patients should be aware of certain side effects to watch for, but can generally resume their everyday activities on the same day as their Botox® session.

Botox® is FDA-approved for treating forehead wrinkles, frown lines, crow’s feet, and platysma bands connecting the neck and jaw, and has been safely applied many millions of times throughout the world. Minor side effects may include headache, dry eyes, tiredness, and blurred vision. Anyone interested in learning more about potential side effects, as well as what to watch for in terms of more serious side effects, can talk to our doctors at Western Dermatology Consultants.

11

Keeping the Glow Going: How Do You Take Care of Your Skin Post-Botox®?

Want to keep that smooth, youthful look going strong? A few smart habits can help maximize and extend the results of your Botox® treatment. First, avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for at least twenty-four hours. Stay upright for four hours post-injection and steer clear of intense workouts or saunas that could increase circulation. Protect your skin from sun damage with a high-SPF sunscreen and a good hat. Staying hydrated, managing stress, and maintaining a regular Botox® schedule will all help you enjoy consistently beautiful results.

12

How Long Does Botox® Actually Last and When Should You Re-Treat?

Your results will develop gradually over the next week, leaving you looking relaxed, refreshed, and totally natural.

Patients should begin to see a reduction in the appearance of their wrinkles within twenty-four to forty-eight hours of receiving their Botox® injection. Allergan, the cosmetic’s manufacturer, states that results can last up to four months, though some patients have reported enjoying its benefits for longer. Its exact duration depends on a variety of factors, but anyone who receives the injections can expect several months of smoothed-out lines and a refreshed appearance.

As the effects fade and wrinkles gradually return, patients can discuss a new round of injections so that they can maintain their unlined look.

13

Botox® vs. Dermal Fillers: What's the Difference?

Botox® and fillers often get lumped into the same category, but they do very different things. Botox® is all about relaxing muscle movement to prevent wrinkles from forming, especially in the upper face. Fillers, meanwhile, add volume to reduce static wrinkles and refine areas like the cheeks, lips, and jawline. Think of Botox® as wrinkle prevention and fillers as volume restoration. Many of our patients benefit from both, and we’re happy to help you figure out the perfect mix to meet your goals.

14

What Else Can Botox® Do?

As noted above, Botox® is effective at combating hyperhidrosis in addition to serving as a popular cosmetic. The injectable is also routinely used by medical doctors in relieving neck pain from a condition known as cervical dystonia, managing migraine symptoms, controlling eyelid spasms, treating overactive bladders, and helping strabismus sufferers’ eyes to align.

While Western Dermatology Consultants offers Botox® only for cosmetic uses, these other applications available elsewhere speak to the injectable’s safety, efficacy, and utility.

15

How Do Botox® and Dysport® Compare?

Thinking about trying Dysport® as well? Botox® was the original neuromodulator, FDA- approved for cosmetic use first, while Dysport® came later with a slightly different formula. Both are botulinum toxin injectables used to relax facial muscles and smooth wrinkles, but they’re not identical—Dysport® tends to spread more, making it great for larger areas, while Botox® offers more precise control. Their dosing units are different, too, so they aren’t interchangeable.

A common question we get is, "Can you get Botox® and Dysport® at the same time?" You can—but not in the same area. Some people use one for the forehead and another for crow’s feet, depending on what works best.

Another popular question is, "Can you switch from Dysport® to Botox® or vice versa?" Definitely! Many patients try both over time. We’ll go over the differences and help create a personalized treatment plan during your consultation.

What Are Some Complementary Treatments or Add-Ons That Enhance Botox® Results?

Botox® pairs beautifully with other aesthetic services offered at Western Dermatology Consultants. Botox® works well to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on specific areas of the face, but there may be other aspects a patient wants addressed in order to achieve a refreshed, rejuvenated, youthful look.

Want to take your results to the next level? Fillers help restore volume to areas that may have lost their youthful plumpness or add definition to improve facial balance. Restylane® Kysse and Juvéderm® Volbella® and Volux at our practice are the perfect partners to Botox®.

While Botox® works wonders on expression lines, it doesn’t tackle things like dark spots, uneven tone, or texture issues. If you’re looking to brighten your complexion, fade scars, or reduce sun damage, skin rejuvenation procedures like chemical peels, fractional laser treatments, or microdermabrasion can help you glow from every angle. The Spa @ WDC offers a range of treatments that work together to refine your complexion, boost your glow, and restore a youthful, refreshed look.
