How to Prepare for Your First Laser Treatment

Western Dermatology
September 23, 2025

Starting a new skin treatment can feel exciting and a little intimidating. At The Spa at Western Dermatology Consultants, our goal is to make sure you feel confident and cared for every step of the way.

If you’re considering a laser this season, here’s what you need to know before your first appointment.

Why Preparation Matters

Lasers are powerful tools that deliver transformative results. Preparing your skin ensures that your treatment is safe, effective, and comfortable and that your results look their very best. Think of it as laying the foundation for your glow.

1. Protect Your Skin From the Sun

We love lasers in fall and winter because shorter days mean less sun exposure. Still, it’s essential to:

  • Avoid tanning beds and intentional sun exposure.
  • Use a daily broad-spectrum SPF, even on cloudy days.
  • Protect your skin with hats or shade when outdoors.

Healthy, protected skin is the safest canvas for your treatment.

2. Pause Certain Products

Some active ingredients can make your skin more sensitive. Your provider may ask you to avoid products like:

  • Retinoids or retinol
  • Exfoliating acids (AHAs, BHAs)
  • Harsh scrubs

This gives your skin time to settle and helps reduce the risk of irritation.

3. Skip Waxing or Harsh Treatments

In the weeks leading up to your appointment, it’s best to avoid hair removal, chemical peels, or other treatments on the same area. This helps ensure your skin barrier is calm and intact before your laser session.

4. Know What to Expect at Your Consultation

Your consultation is designed to be thorough and personalized. Together, we’ll:

  • Review your skin goals and concerns
  • Assess your skin type and condition
  • Select the right laser (or combination) for you
  • Outline how many sessions you may need
  • Discuss aftercare and answer your questions

This is your time to feel comfortable and informed, so bring any questions you may have.

5. Come With Fresh, Clean Skin

On treatment day, arrive without makeup, lotions, or SPF. Fresh skin allows us to begin safely and ensures your treatment is as effective as possible.
