Kybella Double Chin

A Quick, Simple Way to Reduce Your Double Chin in Albuquerque

A double chin can be a stubborn thing. The conspicuous pocket of submental fat may resist even the strictest of diets and exercise plans. Surgically removing the unwanted cells via liposuction has long been a go-to solution, but a newer development can deliver the same effects* without the incisions or recovery time: Kybella®. Albuquerque’s Western Dermatology Consultants offers the injectable, which can be administered in minutes and left to work while you go about your daily life.

Kybella® impacts the excess fat, which melts away from the under-chin area to reveal more definition and slim contours*. Without the double chin, there is a clear transition from the face to the neck, especially when seen in profile.

How Kybella® Works

The human body uses a chemical known as deoxycholic acid to break down dietary fat, and Kybella® uses that same chemical from the digestive process to break down the fat that collects beneath the chin. Once injected, Kybella® disrupts the targeted cells themselves, rendering them unable to remain cohesive. The impacted fat is absorbed by the body and then eliminated. Once triggered, this is an automatic process.

Kybella® Treatment Details

A typical Kybella® session at Albuquerque’s Western Dermatology Consultants involves a round of injections, up to 50, that generally takes 15 minutes to half an hour to complete—though the specific time varies from person to person.

The most common potential side effects from Kybella® are those shared by all injectable treatments: redness, swelling, and bruising. These are generally superficial effects and should fade on their own in the days and weeks after a treatment session. Other side effects are possible.

While the active ingredient begins working once injected, it can take several weeks for visual results to become apparent. This is because the body needs time to process and get rid of the freed fat.

Many Kybella® patients find that they achieve their ideal results after two to four treatment sessions, each spaced at least a month apart. In some cases, six sessions may be recommended. Clinical studies revealed that 59 percent of the patients treated needed six sessions to achieve the results they were seeking. After this, no future treatments were expected, as the effects are cumulative and fat removed from the body cannot “re-form” and continue contributing to the double-chin look.

Kybella injections to the submental (under the chin) area

Western Dermatology Consultants uses Kybella® at its Albuquerque offices to address unwanted fat cells that cling to the submental area, creating a double chin. A treatment session involves precision injections to the neck area, but should last less than half an hour.

Your individualized treatment plan will be discussed at your consultation, which will also include information on cost, side effects to watch for, and other options for getting a similar or complementary cosmetic result. For instance, some patients are inspired by new, more youthful facial contours and choose to address another common cosmetic complaint—wrinkles—with BOTOX®, hollows with a dermal filler, and more. The ultimate goal of any aesthetic treatment is to create and maintain a look of proportion and balance so one part of the face does not appear “out of synch” with the others.

What Causes Submental Fullness?

A bulge that forms at the neck may be referred to as a double chin or submental fullness. Typically, the culprit is an abundance of large fat cells, though it manifests differently in different people. Some men and women find that they develop a double chin early in life due to genetics. Others see it form as they get older and gain weight.

While fat cells cause the bulge, remember that excess skin can also contribute to the look. Patients who choose Kybella® should have skin that is pliant enough to retract back over the newly slimmer contours once the treatment takes effect. If not, there are solutions available for skin tightening, too.

More Kybella® Information

Diet control and exercise are, of course, recommended and necessary for a healthy lifestyle, but their cosmetic benefits may be more limited than hoped for and could use a boost from the Western Dermatology Consultants team. Patients who choose Kybella® are frequently those who have tried other strategies to lose their double chin but have gained nothing but frustration. In these cases, the submental fat may be referred to as “diet resistant” because of its ability to persist in the face of lifestyle changes that successfully reduce fat elsewhere on the body.

Even dieting that does reduce a double chin can’t guarantee the same results as Kybella®, since dieting reduces the size of fat cells, while the injectable basically removes them from the equation. Fat cells that are merely reduced in size but left in place can someday return to their larger state.

That said, remember that Kybella® is for cosmetic transformations only. The injectable is not intended for use as a weight-loss method.

Ideal candidates are women and men older than the age of 18 who are not satisfied with the look of submental fullness and who have realistic expectations about what Kybella® can and can’t do.

Other Fat-Reduction and Related Treatments

While Kybella® focuses on the submental area, patients who want to address stubborn fat elsewhere on the body can choose the nonsurgical CoolSculpting®, which cools down unwanted fat cells to a critical temperature, rupturing their membranes. After a treatment, the impacted fatty tissue is processed naturally by the body.

For patients who prefer the opposite of cold, VelaShape® uses radiofrequency energy, infrared light, and vacuum technology to heat fat cells for a treatment intended for circumferential and cellulite reduction. The energy delivered can kick start production of collagen and elastin, two components of healthy, youthful skin.

Note that none of these treatments is intended for weight loss. Fat reduction with any option available at Western Dermatology Consultants is for cosmetic, body-contouring purposes. Talk to the team about which treatment might be right for you.

Sometimes, loose skin can contribute to a look of submental fullness. Thermage® is a radiofrequency energy-delivering device that tightens skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face and elsewhere. It can also help to “firm up” a softened jawline, address a turkey neck, and increase tone and definition in the submental area.
