3 Myths About BOTOX®

It’s often impossible to fully avoid wrinkles—even if you do all the right things, like vigilantly applying sunscreen. All the small movements we make with our faces each day while talking to others, communicating our emotions through facial expressions, and other activities will eventually result in the development of expression wrinkles. There’s a simple way to temporarily soften these wrinkles and restore a younger appearance—BOTOX®—but there are also many myths circulating about this treatment. Because of the rumor mill, it can often be difficult to know what’s true and what’s false. One of the biggest questions many patients have is: Will I look frozen with BOTOX®? Our Albuquerque, NM-based patients frequently ask us this when they’re considering injectables to reduce facial wrinkles.

With that in mind, here’s what you should know about the myth of BOTOX® making you look expressionless—as well as other common myths about this treatment.

Myth 1: BOTOX® Gives You a “Robotic” Look

There’s a common misconception that your face will look “frozen,” “unnatural,” or “tight” after you’ve had wrinkle injections. When BOTOX® is performed by a skilled, experienced injector who does it correctly, the results can actually look very subtle. It may even be difficult for others to tell that you’ve had it, even if they see that you look refreshed or even younger. It’s important to use small amounts of BOTOX® and have it injected into the right areas so that the face is still able to move normally.

Myth 2: Wrinkles Will Get Worse if You Stop Using BOTOX®

It’s true that your wrinkles will come back if you stop using BOTOX®, but you don’t need to worry about lines developing faster and worse than they were before. This isn’t the case. In fact, consistent long-term BOTOX® use may even “train” your muscles to relax more, making wrinkles less visible even if you eventually stop treatments.

Myth 3: BOTOX® Injections Will Be Painful

BOTOX® is injected with a very fine needle, and most patients say it causes less discomfort when compared to most other cosmetic treatments. Some patients say they feel a slight pinching or stinging sensation during injections, but the solution itself is not painful. There are only mild, temporary side effects as well.

Our team at The Spa @ Western Dermatology Consultants will take all of the steps to ensure that your results from wrinkle injections look as subtle and natural as possible. Why Facial Exercises Don’t Help with Wrinkles

The concept of “exercising” the face to reduce signs of aging has become very popular in recent times and has been promoted by many celebrities. As our skin loses elasticity over time, it can be challenging to maintain a youthful appearance, so many people are searching for new ways to maintain supple, smooth skin. Those people also tend to prefer solutions that are as natural as possible. Certain facial exercises are supposedly designed to slim the cheeks and reduce wrinkles, and supporters of this method believe that by strengthening muscles you add definition to the face to counteract the deflation of skin. In reality, there is little to no scientific evidence showing that these exercises help you achieve any improvement. The truth is that these facial exercises should not be thought of as a replacement for wrinkle relaxers. As our Albuquerque-based team puts it: They’re ultimately just a fad. In fact, dermatologists know that these exercises won’t have any benefit—and can actually do more harm than good.

We know that regularly exercising other areas of the body keeps us fit and looking younger. For people who want slimmer, more defined cheeks, however, repetitive muscle movements won’t be of any help. While exercise strengthens muscles and burns calories, we can’t control where those calories come from. In other words, we can’t determine from where we lose fat. As spot reduction isn’t possible, exercising the face won’t make the cheeks smaller. Even if the muscles temporarily become bigger, the effect is only temporary.

When it comes to wrinkles, facial exercises may also have the undesirable effect of making the face look older. Facial muscles are attached to the skin and stretch it in various directions. Since muscle movement is what causes many wrinkles to form in the first place, the repetitive contractions from movements such as frowning, smiling, or pursing the lips may only cause wrinkles to develop at a faster rate or make existing lines deeper and more visible.

The better thing to do is find your most relaxed facial expression and focus on maintaining that. Moisturize, apply sunscreen each day, and use BOTOX® to relax overworked facial muscles.

Can BOTOX® Prevent Wrinkles from Developing?

We’ve all wished we could turn back the clock on aging. Of course, there’s no way of realistically doing that. We have to live with the fact that our skin is constantly folded and creased when we make facial expressions each day, or even during small movements involved in chewing gum or drinking from straws. Lines eventually form in the areas where the skin folds most frequently. Once the body begins to produce less collagen, our skin isn’t able to snap back into its normal position, and expression lines start to deepen.

While there’s no time machine we can use to avoid this, there are some cosmetic treatments that can indeed delay the effects of aging for anyone who wants to preserve youthful skin for as long as possible. The beauty of wrinkle relaxers from our Albuquerque, NM-based practice is that they not only do BOTOX® and similar injectables quickly minimize the fine lines that have already become more pronounced on the face—such as crow’s feet and frown lines—but they can also delay or prevent the formation of additional wrinkles.

This is one of the reasons why a younger demographic of patients—meaning in their 20s and 30s—have begun using neuromodulators.

There are many advantages to what is known as “preventative BOTOX®.” The goal of these wrinkle injections is to prevent those early, faint fine lines that appear when we smile, frown, or make other expressions from deepening and becoming engraved into the skin.

If you’re bothered by faint lines in your 20s or have a very expressive face and know that you’re most likely going to want wrinkle relaxers later in life, it makes sense to start early. Once the lines have become more pronounced, patients will need more units of fillers and neuromodulators or more invasive procedures to correct them.

Also, if you start treatments earlier in life, you may not need as many units as someone who starts injections at an older age because your wrinkles will be fewer in number and less pronounced.

How to Prevent Chlorine Rash

While it’s the most fun time of the year for many of us, summertime can be rough on the complexion. We’re usually much more active during these months, but all of the moments we spend exposed to the elements—during barbecues, outdoor sports, tropical vacations, and lounging by the pool—often leave us with dry, wrinkled, or painful skin by the time September rolls around. You can use BOTOX® from our Albuquerque-based team to minimize wrinkles around the eyes from sun exposure, but the injectable won’t sooth dry, cracked, or blistered skin from other types of stressors.

The chlorine that’s added to swimming pools and hot tubs serves an important purpose—destroying germs and bacteria—but unfortunately this chemical is also an irritant that strips the natural oils from your skin, especially when you’re exposed to it for extended periods. This leaved your skin dehydrated and speeds up premature aging. Chlorine can also cause an itchy, red rash that’s similar to a chemical burn, especially among those who have sensitive skin or allergies.

The good news is: If you love everything that’s involved in late summer, you won’t have to let sensitive or irritated skin prevent you from doing the things you enjoy—like swimming. Simply plan to take certain steps before and after you swim to avoid uncomfortable rashes. You may also want to give your skin time to heal by avoiding exposure to chlorine for a while.

• Start by putting on a waterproof, broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50+) before you get in the water. For it to work properly, you need to apply it 15 minutes before you go outside. This protects your skin from UV damage and may reduce chemical damage from chlorine.

• Create a barrier to protect your skin from the water by applying petroleum jelly to irritated areas before swimming.

• Shower or bathe with clean water right after you get out of the pool, then use a good moisturizer that contains ceramides to protect the skin’s barrier and replace the natural oils it may have lost.

5 Great Reasons to Try BOTOX®

If you want to take years off your face, minimally invasive injectables are one of the ideal ways to quickly make your skin look younger without having a surgical procedure. People from all walks of life commonly use botulinum toxin-based injectables to temporarily soften the wrinkles on the face that bother them. Thinking about trying BOTOX® injectables in Albuquerque, but still unsure whether they’re what you want? Check out these five major benefits of having neuromodulator injections from The Spa @ Western Dermatology Consultants.

1. Make Expression Wrinkles Look Smoother

Other than keeping your face still and expressionless forever, there’s no real way of stopping wrinkles that occur due to facial expressions made when smiling, talking, chewing, and squinting. The solution to fixing these wrinkles is relaxing the underlying muscles that cause the skin to bunch together. BOTOX® is approved for frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles, which are referred to as expression wrinkles.

2. Prevent Additional Wrinkles from Occurring

One of the long-term benefits of having BOTOX® is that by relaxing the muscles that pull on the skin, you not only stop existing wrinkles from getting deeper, but also prevent new ones from forming. Many younger patients have started to use BOTOX® for this reason, known as preventative BOTOX®.

3. Enjoy the Convenience

Injectables are typically fast, “lunchtime” procedures that you can easily fit into your busy schedule. This is what makes BOTOX® such an attractive option for many people. There aren’t any major side effects that require recovery, so there’s no down time to speak of.

4. Get a More Approachable Look

When crinkles and lines form all over your face, it can make others think you look angry, mean, sad, or unfriendly—even if those descriptors don’t match your personality at all. BOTOX® can give you a happier, more open-looking face.

5. Treat Other Concerns

Along with improving wrinkles on the forehead or surrounding the eyes, BOTOX® is also used for wrinkles on the center and lower part of the face and even on the neck where excessive muscle activity has led to asymmetry, sagging, or dimpling. We can use it for bunny lines by the nose, chin dimpling, lip lines, sagging eyebrows, downturned mouth corners, and neck bands.
