Restylane
Restylane is a safe and natural
cosmetic filler used to correct
moderate to severe facial
wrinkles and folds, such as the
folds between the nose and
mouth. Because Restylane is made
of hyaluronic acid, a naturally
occurring substance in the body,
and is not derived from
animals/animal products, there
is virtually no risk of
animal-based disease
transmission or allergic
reaction.
Restylane has been used safely
to correct a variety of facial
wrinkles and folds as well as to
enhance the appearance of the
lips in over 60 countries. On
average, treatment results last
approximately six months, so
typically treatments are
scheduled twice yearly. While
re-treatment is required to
maintain the desired effects,
Restylane was technologically
designed to maintain its
cosmetic effects until it is
almost completely degraded.
Restylane is administered by
injections directly into the
skin in tiny amounts. Using an
ultrafine needle and topical
anesthetic prior to the
procedure typically minimizes
patient discomfort. At times, a
dental block using injectable
anesthetic is used to optimize
patient comfort for certain
treatment areas.
The most commonly reported
side-effects from Restylane
injection are temporary redness
and swelling at injection sites.
These typically last 2-3
days and often application of
ice to the treatment areas can
help to reduce these
side-effects.
Prior to treatment with
Restylane, patients should avoid
taking aspirin, non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory
medications ibuprofen, Advil,
Alleve, etc..), St John’s Wort,
Vitamin E, and Gingko Biloba, as
these may increase the risk of
bleeding or bruising at
injection sites. It is important
for a patient who has previously
suffered from facial cold sores
to notify her/his
provider of this, as the needle
punctures from Restylane could
contribute to an outbreak.
Generally, for those patients an
antiviral medication is
prescribed for the patient to
take prophylactically.
